When you meet people at social gatherings, in restaurants, or at any get-together place, you will see that when you try to talk to somebody and they are not available, they are physically present—you see them, their eyes are looking at you—but they are not mentally there. Most of the time, people see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. If you check on them, asking, “What did I tell you?” you might be surprised when they say, “Oh, can you repeat what you said?” because it did not register. Therefore, it is important to start a conversation by asking how they are doing or how their day is going, rather than immediately talking about yourself. This way, you create a space where you can then share your information.
I was sitting alone in a restaurant having lunch when someone came up and asked, “Are you guys done?” I looked at the empty chair in front of me and then at myself. She asked again, “Are you guys done?” This suggested she saw two people, even though there was only one person sitting there. So, I said, “Not done yet,” and she left. To that extent, people are so absorbed in their own mindset that they say what they are thinking and don’t notice what’s actually happening. This reflects a robotic generation, well-programmed by computers, social media, and machines.
If you use machines for most of your day or for almost all your activities, you end up becoming like one. Thus, your behavior becomes mechanical. If you want to look for any emotion through that machine, let the machine run first—let it finish its process. Once it is done running, then you may see some emotion. At least save your emotion and try not to become a machine yourself. Manage the extra data you keep adding and downloading, as it fills your head with information from various sources that you don’t even remember. People are experiencing forgetfulness and relying on calendars and reminders for everything. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish between a machine and a human being. At least remain a human being to have a human experience.
